On the surface, India seems like a culture of close-knit families, but in reality there is an enormous need among the multitudes of elderly who are sometimes treated as a burden by their children and grandchildren. With few nursing homes and little government assistance, many widows are forced to live on the porch of a relative's house. Sometimes they are fed sparingly in hope that they will die sooner. There are, of course, some family members who struggle to feed themselves and simply are not able to provide for their aging parents.
In 2006 God led us to begin the HOPE Manna program for widows. We provide meals, blankets, sweaters, and hut repairs as needed. Most importantly, the able bodied attend morning and evening devotions at HOPE for fellowship and spiritual growth.
Since the start of the HOPE Manna program we have begun similar programs in other areas. We now partner with local pastors in several different villages who assist widows, elderly, and people with disabilities.
The HOPE Manna Program (HMP) is the elderly ministry which takes place at the HOPE Girls Home, and generally has about 20-25 members. The "Widows/Elderly Ministry" are the widows and elderly being ministered to outside the HOPE home and ministry. It has more than 140 members from more than 20 different villages, at least 15 different pastors helping us to carry out the ministry. The Lord has provided the funds to expand the "Widows/Elderly Ministry" to many more in 2019. Praise the Lord!
We constantly pray for wisdom as we hear the stories of those asking for help and try to discern the actuality of their need as well as their commitment to following Christ.
In addition to helping with their physical needs, He is now leading us to put a higher priority upon their spiritual lives, making greater effort to lead them into a fruitful and happy life with Him.
To donate for the widows and elderly, please specify your gift one of 2 ways:
1) If you want to give specifically for the widows ministry at HOPE, select the "RHM General Fund or Designated Gift" option within the donation page, then enter a comment in the "General comment and/or" field saying you want your gift to go for the HOPE Manna Program (HMP).
2) If you want to give for the larger "Widow/Elderly Ministry" (all the widows and elderly ministry outside of HOPE), click onto that option within the donation page. If you give by check, designate which of these 2 ministry options you would like to give for. If you simply say “widows” (or similar), it will go into the ‘Widows/Elderly Ministry’ fund.”
